The current signal
NOAA’s September 10 discussion puts the chance of a very strong El Niño this fall and winter above 90 percent. What that means for rain and warmth depends on where you live and the time of year.
For a small-space grower, the useful response is local. Notice where wind reaches a pot, where afternoon sun reflects off a wall and where water can escape.
Plants in pots have only so much soil. The University of Maryland points to three needs: the right light, water and drainage. In extreme heat, some shelter from harsh afternoon sun can help, too.
If the coming season brings wetter, warmer or more changeable conditions where you live, knowing your two best spots gives you an adjustment to make before the plant becomes the alarm.
Monticello: The wall changed the growing season

At Monticello, a long garden terrace ran along the southeast side of a mountain. By the early 1800s, it was a place to test what the land could grow.
Enslaved workers built the great terrace and its supporting stone wall. Their work made the garden possible. Thomas Jefferson used it to test many kinds of food crops.
The location mattered. The slope gave shelter. The wall created a warmer pocket at its base. Figs grew in beds beside that wall, and the garden’s exposure helped extend production into colder months.
But extra warmth was not automatically a gift. A visitor, Margaret Bayard Smith, looked at the south-facing garden in 1809 and wondered whether the intense heat might become too much for plants.
That observation is the part a patio grower can use. The same feature can be helpful in one season and troublesome in another. A warm wall in cool weather may become a harsh place during a hot afternoon.
There is no single best location independent of the plant, the season and the job you want the space to do. That is why copying another person’s setup can disappoint even when the pots and seeds look identical.
Monticello’s terrace was enormous beside a modern balcony. Yet its useful lesson does not require acreage. A few feet can change shelter, reflected heat and how much sun reaches a plant.
Think of your own space as two or three different places, rather than one yard with one forecast. Which corner warms first? Which stays exposed to wind? Which catches a long afternoon shadow?
You can start answering those questions without moving a heavy planter or buying a thermometer. Compare two reachable spots and write what each one offers. The next time conditions shift, you will have a reason for the move instead of another guess.
Persia: The garden was a made place

The Persian garden tradition reaches back to the time of Cyrus the Great in the sixth century BCE. At Pasargadae, planted space and carefully arranged water were part of a designed royal landscape.
Across later centuries, the tradition developed in different parts of Iran while retaining a clear pattern. Water channels, planted sections, trees and architecture worked together. The garden was both useful ground and a picture of how an ordered world should look.
UNESCO explains how those parts worked in harsh climates. Where trees and plants stood helped shape the climate inside. Water had to be supplied, moved and used. Buildings and plants shaped the space.
The striking idea is that the garden was more than a collection of plants. Its layout helped shape what reached the plants. A tree’s shade, the route of water and the placement of an open space belonged to the same design problem.
A household version is much less grand. You can use the same question in a much smaller space. You are noticing the shelter and exposure that already exist.
A wall is already there. So is the afternoon shade cast by a building. Your balcony may have a windy end and a calmer end. Those differences cost nothing to observe, but they can change which place suits a container.
That is the bridge from the old garden to today’s small project. Before asking what else to add, ask what the site is already doing. Then match a plant to the part of the site that serves it.
Some plants need more direct sun than the sheltered corner offers. Some pots cannot be moved safely. Those limits are useful information, too. A good growing plan begins with the actual place, not the picture you hoped it would resemble.

Choose one manageable container or planned planting. Read its light needs from the label or your extension guide.
Compare two safe spots. Note current sun or shade, wind exposure and nearby heat-reflecting walls. A fifteen-minute look is a snapshot; use what you already know about the day’s sun and schedule one later check.
Check the water exit. Confirm the pot has clear drain holes and will not sit in collected water.
Choose one adjustment. Move only a light, safely handled pot if the second spot better meets its needs. Otherwise write the spot to use for your next container. Avoid a sudden move from deep shade into intense sun.
Save a comparison note. Write SPOT A, SPOT B and WHY. Set a reminder to check the plant and soil tomorrow before watering.
