NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center says hot, seasonally dry conditions could expand drought across parts of the Northwest. It also notes that drought may develop in parts of the upper Midwest and remain stubborn in parts of the Southeast.
That does not mean every yard will dry out. It means one household habit becomes more valuable: know where your water gives you the biggest return before the hottest, driest stretch arrives.
The mental model is simple: your soil is a battery. Bare, loose soil leaks charge fast. Soil covered with roots, compost, and mulch holds useful moisture longer.

In the early 1930s, drought hit the Great Plains after years of heavy plowing and overgrazing had stripped away much of the native grass that once held soil in place. The Library of Congress notes that severe drought began in 1931. Fourteen major dust storms were reported in 1932. The next year there were thirty-eight.
The problem was not simply that rain stopped. The land had lost part of its ability to hold what rain did arrive. When crops died, bare soil sat open to wind. On April 14, 1935, the huge storm remembered as Black Sunday turned daylight dark across parts of the Plains.
The federal answer changed over time. In 1935 Congress called soil erosion a national menace and created the Soil Conservation Service. By 1937, the Shelterbelt Project was planting long bands of trees across the Plains to slow wind and protect soil.
Your four-foot garden is not the Dust Bowl. The scale is completely different. But the small lesson is useful: water lasts longer when the soil system is built to keep it.
A gardener who only thinks about the hose reacts after the problem starts. A gardener who thinks about shade, mulch, roots, and soil cover builds a little storage before the dry spell arrives.
PARALLEL 2: UXMAL BUILT A CITY AROUND SAVING RAIN

Uxmal treated rainfall as something to capture while it was available.
The Maya city of Uxmal rose in a part of the Yucatán where dependable surface water was hard to find. There were no big rivers running through the city. Rain had to be captured, moved, and saved.
Archaeologists have documented basins called aguadas and bottle-shaped underground tanks called chultunes. Smithsonian reporting on Uxmal describes a system that could store huge amounts of rainwater for the dry season. Roofs, plazas, slopes, basins, and underground storage all became parts of one water system.
That is what makes the story useful. The Maya were not waiting for a dry month to invent water. They were building capture and storage into the city when rain was available.
The system did not make Uxmal invulnerable. Long dry periods could still overwhelm it. That is the narrowing point. Storage is not magic. It is time.
Your garden version is tiny: mulch catches less sunlight, richer soil holds more moisture, and a written watering order stops you from spreading scarce water evenly when only a few plants matter most.
Across BOTH examples, the pattern is this: dry weather gets dangerous fastest when a system stores nothing before the rain stops.

Do not try to water everything equally. Protect the plants that give your household the most food, then protect the soil that keeps that water from leaving too fast.
