NOAA's outlook for August 4 through August 10 warned of prolonged heat in the West. It also flagged an increased risk of rapid drought across parts of the Great Plains and Corn Belt.
That does not mean every reader faces the same weather.
It does mean a common garden weakness matters more: bare soil sits in direct sun, loses moisture to moving air, and takes the full force of hard rain when it finally comes.
USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service says soil cover helps conserve moisture, reduce temperature, soften raindrop impact, suppress weeds, and protect the soil food web.

PARALLEL 1: THE DUST BOWL SOIL LESSON

The Dust Bowl made one lesson hard to miss: uncovered soil gives heat and wind an easy target.
In the early 1930s, drought struck the Great Plains after years of heavy plowing and grazing had left large areas exposed.
When crops failed, roots no longer held much of the topsoil. Wind found a loose surface and carried it away.
The number of reported dust storms rose from 14 in 1932 to 38 in 1933. On May 11, 1934, a major storm carried fine soil over Washington, D.C., and out over the Atlantic.
Then came Black Sunday on April 14, 1935. A huge wall of dust crossed the Plains and turned daylight dark.
Hugh Hammond Bennett had spent years warning that soil could not stay productive when it was treated as an endless loose surface. Congress created the Soil Conservation Service on April 27, 1935.
The answer was not one magic product. Farmers used contour work, shelterbelts, crop residue, cover crops, and other methods that slowed wind and water at the soil surface.
A four-foot garden is not the Great Plains, and a dry planter is not the Dust Bowl.
But the small lesson is the same: bare ground gives weather the first move.
PARALLEL 2: DESERT RUNOFF FARMS IN THE NEGEV

Ancient desert farmers used stone channels and terraces to slow rare water and keep it near useful ground.
In the arid Negev, ancient farmers built systems that treated brief rain as something to catch, slow, and place.
Stone terrace walls crossed dry stream channels called wadis. When rain came, runoff moved downhill, met the walls, and spread into fields instead of racing away.
The water also carried fine soil. Over time, the fields could gain both moisture and sediment.
These systems are often linked to the Nabataeans, whose kingdom grew around trade routes and desert settlements. Research shows the full story is more complex: spring irrigation appeared earlier, while large runoff farms became widespread in the Late Antique period, roughly the fourth through seventh centuries.
That narrower history makes the lesson stronger, not weaker.
Desert farming worked because people shaped the ground before the water arrived. Channels, terraces, stones, and managed soil gave a short storm somewhere useful to stop.
Your garden does not need a wadi or a stone wall.
It needs the same basic move: slow the loss at the surface so more moisture stays near the roots.
THE PATTERN TO NOTICE
Across BOTH examples, the pattern is this: water becomes useful when the ground is prepared to hold it.

Do not answer every dry garden with more water.
First ask what the soil is doing with the water it already gets.
