The current U.S. Drought Monitor map is a useful reminder: dry conditions are not only about how much rain falls. They are about whether water reaches soil, roots, streams, and reserves.
The Drought Monitor explains that D0 means abnormally dry conditions and D1 is the least intense drought level. It also separates short-term drought impacts, like agriculture and grasslands, from longer-term water problems.
That matters for small growers. A fast storm can run off a hard potting mix. A thin, bare container can dry quickly after one sunny afternoon.
The memorable rule: your plant does not drink from the weather report. It drinks from the two inches around its roots.

Long before modern drip lines, ancient Nabataean farmers worked dry land in the Negev Desert.

Nabataean growers used channels, small dams, terraces, and basins to guide brief storm water into fields where crops could use it.

The same idea works in a pot: cover the surface, shape a shallow basin, and pour slowly so water reaches the root zone instead of slipping down the sides.
The comparison should stay narrow. A patio tomato is not an ancient desert farm.
