What’s happening now?

You find a half-used seed packet while putting the garden away. The seeds look fine. So do the ones in the next packet. How do you know which ones are worth keeping?

Late fall is a good time to sort those packets. A seed can look normal and still fail to sprout. Find that out now and you have time to replace it before your first planting day.

Has this happened before?

A USDA film from the 1940s opens on a family leafing through seed catalogs for its victory garden. But the film is called Saving the Garden Crop. Much of it is about what happens after the growing is done.

What happened next?

The film shows families making room to store food so it can still be used months later. The lesson starts with what you have on hand. Know what will last before you count on it. Your seed box deserves the same check.

What can I do?

Pick one old packet. Put ten seeds on a damp paper towel. Fold it, slip it in a labeled bag, and keep it at the temperature recommended for that seed. Check for sprouts and use the packet’s expected sprout time to set a reminder. Keep the towel damp, not soaked. Record how many sprouted before you decide whether to keep or replace the packet.
